Montezuma, Costa Rica

San Juan del Sur was once a commercial port for exportation and fishing vessels and during that era, shipping activities brought considerable wealth to the town. The remnants of those glory days can still be seen in a few grand old colonial buildings. When Nicaragua’s major port moved to a location further north, the town fell from prosperity into poverty, but by taking full advantage of it´s picturesque location by the sea, it has re-invented itself as a beach holiday destination.

Amongst backpackers, San Juan del Sur has earned it´s reputation as Nicaragua’s party town. There are plenty of hostels, guesthouses, bars and restaurants to choose from and the town is very tourist friendly. Thanks to it´s developed tourist infrastructure, prices are a little higher than the rest of Nicaragua.

Aside from nocturnal activities most visitors to San Juan del Sur spend their days visiting beaches and chasing waves. The good surf spots and nicer beaches are outside of town and you´ll need to take a collectivo taxi to reach them. There are also a number of Spanish schools in town and the opportunity to organise volunteering.
