Casa 579 was opened in 2007 and is a stylish guesthouse, located in the colonial hill-top neighbourhood of Santa Teresa. The big house offers spacious rooms and communal areas and the 180º views from the living room and roof terrace on Rio de Janeiro and Christ the Redeemer are absolutely stunning.
Santa Teresa is well connected by public transport to all parts of Rio de Janeiro, and Casa 579 therefore offers a great tranquil base to explore the city, away from the tourist crowds and highrise buildings in Copacabana and Ipanema.
A bed in the spacious 8-bed dorm (no bunk beds, but individually equipped units) costs R$ 35 / 39 in low / high season. Casa 579 also offers 4 private rooms (sleeping 1-4 perons), of which one has an en-suite bathroom. A private room costs R$ 80-130 for 1 person, R$ 100-170 for 2 persons, R$. 170-210 for 3 persons and R$ 210 for 4 persons. The prices rise R$ 20 in high season (from 1st December to 31st March and during the month of August) and there are special prices for Carnaval and New Year. Volunteers get a special discount. All rooms have a fan and hot water is available 24 hrs.
A delicious breakfast is included in the overnight price and the huge roof terrace offers gorgeous views of Rio and Christ the Redeemer. A well-equipped kitchen and TV room with DVD`s are available for the guests, as well as filtered water, coffee and tea are free. There is a computer with internet for 4 R$ per hour, free WIFI, free parking and a laundry service for R$ 25 per machine load. Each rooms has lockable drawers or lockers for valuable storage. Drinks and little snacks can be purchased.
The staff can help with advice about what to do and where to go in Rio and are happy to explain everything and/or book any tours for you. They can also help you organise volunteer work in Rio de Janeiro and together with a UK based company offer dance holidays.
From 9:00 to 20:00 there is always someone around. The staff can assist in English, Spanish, Geman and Portuguese. Reservations are recommended and are best made by email.

A taxi from the international airport will cost about Rs 70-90. Alternatively you can take the "Real" Shuttle Bus to Flamengo for Rs 6 and take taxi from there for about Rs 10 or a Volkswagen Combi (to Silvestre) for Rs 2.
From the Metro Station "Largo do Machado", take bus 407 to Santa Teresa or any Kombi (small Volkswagen transporters) going to "Santa Teresa - Silvestre" and get off right in front of the hostel on Rua Dr. Julio Otoni 579.
