Buga, Colombia

Buga has only recently made it into the backpacker list of places to visit and as such is an exciting place to discover. Located in the lush Cauca Valley at the cross roads for Cali, Buenaventura and Armenia, Buga makes for a convenient and very worthwhile stop.

Considered one of the best places in the country for bird watching, the nearby nature reserves allow for great opportunities to see some of Colombia´s famous bird, insect, monkey and reptile species as well as outdoor persuits such as kite-surfing on the neighbouring Lago Calima.

The town of Buga itself attracts many Colombian tourists each year as a result of the impressive ´Basilica´ and the miracle granting saint ´El Seņor de Los Milagros´. Thanks to the annual pilgrimages, Buga enjoys relatively developed tourism infrastructure, with nice restaurants, bars, ice cream stores and fresh water swimming pools. It is also a town which is easily explored on foot and the shaded parks are great for just sitting and watching the world go by.

Buga has a warm tropical climate and an easy going pace making it a great stop for anyone wanting to enjoy the region´s outdoor attractions from a comfortable and welcoming base.
