South America is famous for it's amazing archaeological sights and each country holds it's own historical treasures. Perhaps this country's most impressive is the pre-Colombian ceremonial sites and sculptures of San Agustin.

Sheltered in a valley by the Magdalena river, this attraction is home to ancient tombs, burial sights and over 500 interesting and bizarre stone figures of varying size. These depict people, animals and creatures important to the beliefs of this mysterious civilization. Many of the statues are contained in the Archaeological park itself, as is an informative museum holding smaller exhibits.

There are other sites further outside of town and can be visited independently on foot or by horseback or jeep tours organised in San Agustin through various agencies and hotels. The main sites further away include La Chakira (3km), El Tablon (1km) and La Pelota (8km) which can be found by following the well marked, scenic trails from town.

The town itself is a nice little country village where the locals still use horse and carts and make their living off the land. The main industry however is tourism and San Agustin spends most of the year waiting for public holidays and long weekends when the tourists come flooding in. To visit midweek though, expect to have the town with its friendly residents and the archeological sites all to yourself!

This is a fascinating place to visit and although it is a 6 hour detour off the Panamericana, the breath-taking, natural beauty of this area alone would make the visit worth-while!

Don't miss...
Parque Arqueologico - About a 3km walk west of San Agustin, this groups together the majority of the San Agustinian sculptures in a well laid-out park and museum. Mesitas A, B and C plus Fuente de Lavapatas and Alto de Lavapatas. The park is open until 4pm. entry 7,000 Pesos
El Tablon - Just outside of San Agustin, this site makes for a nice, short walk to see a collection of six sculptures in their original setting. There is a small cafe and museum here too and also accommodation in cabins. entry free
La Chakira - By continuing on from El Tablon, a further 3km downhill you'll find La Chakira. These carvings in the rocks are almost matched by the breathtaking views from this point. On a cliff edge, this site offers a great viewpoint over the fairytale landscape with the Rio Magdalena running through and waterfalls on all sides! entry free
La Pelota & Alto de Idolos - These sites as well as several others, are further out of town and for those who enjoy the outdoors, this is a great way to combine visits to Archeological sites with trekking through this magical valley. These are often included in the jeep tours. Ask for maps at the Municipal tourist information office on the main street. Entry to Alto de Idolos is included on the archeological park entry ticket.
How 2 get there...
The most common and by far the easiest way to get to San Agustin is by bus from Popayan on the Panamericana. Buses leave several times daily and take about 6 hours through the spectacular, Colombian countryside before dropping you right in the town centre.

Buses also run from Bogota to Neiva from where you can catch a bus to San Agustin.

From Pasto in the south, you can also travel 11 hours to San Agustin through breathtaking scenery.
