Tolú is a laid-back beach town about a three hour bus ride south of Cartagena. Although the tourism here is mainly focused on Colombian holiday-makers, there's a great deal to interest the backpacker. For one thing, if you can make it here in the off season, the hotels which cater normally for Colombians on holiday, drop their prices to backpacker friendly rates allowing you a taste of coastal comfort until the weekend comes!

The beautiful Archipelago de San Bernardo lies not far off shore and these paradise, coral islands make a great day trip. One sight not to miss is the little known, but very impressive gem about 45 minutes outside of Tolú - El Volcan de Lodo. This healing, and supposedly rejuvenating mud volcano is highly entertaining and is well worth the mere 2,000 Peso entrance fee! You can't put a price on looking ten years younger!

Although clearly a Colombian tourist town, Tolú has kept most of its coastal charm with it's bustling market and leafy park complete with resident sloth! This is a lovely destination which is really starting to open up to international travellers and offers attractions similar to those found further north but without the rush and stress of coastal cities.

Don't miss...
Volcan de Lodo - This is a great day trip from Tolú. Good to the body yet still good to the wallet!
Catch a busetta from Calle 2 across from Supermercado Popular going to 'Coveñas' (30mins, 2,500 Pesos). In Coveñas, catch another bus to 'San Antero' (15mins, 1,500 Pesos) where you jump on a moto-taxi to whisk you off to the volcan (5mins, 1,000 Pesos)
Islas de San Bernardo - This is an excellent day trip for beach-lovers! Stop off on Isla Palma and Isla Mucura, visit an eco-park, take a glimpse at the worlds most densely populated island and savour some of Colombia's most beautiful coral islands.
Playa 'el Frances' - Easily reached from Tolú this large and comparatively deserted beach is worth a visit to escape the weekend crowds in town!
Just follow Avenida 2, (keeping the beach on your left) for around 30 minutes on a bike-taxi.

Supermarket - Supermercado Popular on Avenida 2 opposite the bus depot should offer everything you need. For top-ups or just the odd snack, there's a mini-mercado on just about every street corner.
Internet - The best Internet cafe we found was just off the main plaza, on the road to the beach. It has refreshing air-con and offers broadband connection for 2,000 Pesos per hour.
Banks - There's an ATM right next to the bus station on the main plaza.
