One of the most popular destinations in the country and being the tallest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi deservedly draws in the crowds!
At 5897 metres tall, this conical, snow-capped volcano has supposedly caused more death and destruction over the centuries than any other. With it's most recent eruption in 1904, Cotopaxi is now a top attraction and a challenging but rewarding climb, possible with no previous experience.
Right in the centre of the Avenue of Volcanoes, Cotopaxi with it's glacial peak is the focal point of the National Park which allows an excellent taste of Ecuadorian Paramo and is a great area for trekking and observing the native flora and fauna.
There are various tour packages on offer whether you are looking to reach the summit, trek the National Park or acclimatize for later climbs. The majority of agencies operate from Quito although others can be found across the country in Baños. Riobamba and Latacunga as well.
The park can be accessed independently although climbing, particularly on the glaciers is not recommended without a guide as avalanches are not uncommon.
Reaching the summit of Cotopaxi generally involves leaving the refuge at 4800 metres at around midnight to begin the 5-8 hour ascent. Arriving at the peak at around sunrise and with a bit of luck, climbers can afford spectacular views over the neighbouring peaks and surrounding Paramo scenery.
Entry to the Cotopaxi National Park costs $10.00 for foreigners and $2.00 for nationals.
