Historically one of the most important cities in Ecuador and with it's central positioning, Riobamba remains today as a hub for transport and trade within Ecuador. With it's lively atmosphere and Colonial architecture, the town has a nice bustling feel with hints of it's former grandeur.
Originally the country capital, Riobamba has witnessed many a historical landmark for Ecuador including the signing of the first constitution and welcoming such famous visitors as Simon Bolivar over the years.
Much of the Colonial flavour remains in Riobamba's grand plazas, shaded parks and beautiful buildings despite having suffered in the past with earthquakes destroying the town. The cathedral is in fact the only surviving part of the city and takes pride of place on Parque Maldonado. This area is definitely worth a visit as it houses the town's finest architecture and a couple of blocks to the east, the famous market can be found. As an important trading point for communities from all regions, the Saturday market is particularly colourful and lively.
Most visitors to Riobamba intend to either visit the nearby Volcan Chimborazo or board the famous Nariz del Diablo train. The train leaves at 7am on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday mornings although departures are some what sporadic. Taking this beautiful route through the Andes is a great way to see the country while admiring the feat of engineering that is the zig-zagging Devil's Nose Train!
Chimborazo is a challenging climb to the 6310 metre summit and shouldn't be considered without experience or adequate preparation. A popular taster climb is to take a day trip to the base camp and do some trekking from there. However as entrance to the Chimborazo costs a hefty $10, many backpackers are now choosing to explore the beautiful countryside from other slopes. San Juan is a nice community to visit at the foot of the mountain and is a great place to get a taste of Ecuadorian farming life, llamas and all. There's also a Condor centre and hostel nearby, Casa Condor, ask in Riobamba for details on how to reach it.
Riobamba is a pleasant place to stay for a few days and a great starting point for several popular activities in the area.

Banks - Avenida Borja has several ATMs accepting most cards and has a Banco Pichincha further up by Parque Infantil.
Internet - There are surprisingly many internet cafe's in Riobamba all with broadband connection. An especially good choice is Station.net opposite the train station on Avenida Boras. Expect to pay around $1 per hour.
Restaurants - You're unlikely to starve in Riobamba as there is no shortage of restaurants. The majority sell pretty average Ecuadorian food but if you search, there are some really nice places to eat.
