Posada El Gallo Tours, Coro, Venezuela

Sandwiched between the two, Coro is the perfect base from which to explore the Península de Paraguaná to the North and the Sierra de San Luis to the South. These completely different landscapes illustrate the natural contrasts and diversity that makes up Venezuela's Northernmost state - Falcón. From the sand dunes of Los Medanos National Park to the remote tropical beaches of the peninsula to the dramatic mountains and caves of the sierra, this area certainly has enough to keep you occupied for a few days! Posada El Gallo has been offering day tours to explore the highlights of Falcón for over eight years and owner Eric Miglione happily shares his vast knowledge of the area's history, nature and culture with visitors to the area. Travelling by jeep allows groups the flexibility to stop and fully appreciate the surroundings and the possibility to venture off-road to sample the remote beauty of some of the spectacular hidden sights.

Sierra de San Luis
This fertile and mountainous area also known as 'San Crisostomo Falcón National Park' is a beautiful area of some 20,000 hectares encompassing some spectacular mountain scenery and possibly Venezuela's most magnificent caves. As a source of many a local myth, 'Cueva Ahitón de Los Lamentos' is a must for anyone interested in fairytales as some say the sounds heard from inside the cave are the voices of elves. Other theories claim the wailing coming from the depths of the cave is from the Ghosts of slaves guarding the hidden treasures of 'Don Juan de las Colinas', a wealthy Spanish landowner from colonial times. Either way, this is a fascinating attraction and the beautiful surroundings including the old colonial village of 'San Luis' make this a real highlight of the trip. Exploring the costal mountains, the lakes, the valleys and waterfalls and visiting the tropical forests of the national park, a visit to the Sierra de San Luis is a full and varied day. You'll see the best of the natural beauty this area has to offer. This full day tour operates directly from Posada El Gallo and returns to the posada in the evening.

Península de Paraguaná Tour
It is thought that when the Spanish stumbled across this peninsula, they believed it to be a Caribbean island - only later to discover that they had set foot on the vast continent of South America. This peninsula is a breath-taking land of arid, desert-like scenery rich in bird life and where herds of donkeys run wild. In Los Medanos National Park, experience the remote isolation of this desert landscape with dunes reaching 30m in height. Watch flamingos fish by the mangrove-lined eastern shores and see pelicans dive around fishing boats in palm shaded coves further north. Visit the violet tinted salt flats, admire the unusual cactus gardens and get up close to some of the endemic plant, bird and insect species at the 'Montecano Biological Reserve'. Tours also make stops in rural villages to appreciate the beautiful locations, the traditional way of life and to notice the distinctive architecture influenced by neighbouring Dutch islands, Aruba and Curaçao. This is an informative and enjoyable full day tour which returns to Posada El Gallo in the evening. There is sometimes the option to extend the tour to include a night in hammocks by the shore.
