Scottish run HostelTrail opened it's doors in July 2007 to offer budget accommodation and up-to-date advice for travellers visiting Colombia as well as acting as the South American base for the Latin American Hostel Network.
With several years of experience managing hostels both in Europe and in South America Tony Clark & Kim Macphee have kitted out this new hostel with everything a backpacker could want during their stay in Popayan.

HostelTrail has a total of 11 rooms including a 7-bed ensuite dorm. Singles, doubles and twins rooms are also available.Prices start at 16,000 Pesos for a dorm bed. Single rooms cost 28,000 Pesos with shared bathroom and 38000 Pesos with private bathroom. A double room costs 40,000 Pesos with shared bath and 48,000 Pesos with private bathroom. A fully equipped self-catering kitchen is also available for guest use along with free tea & Colombian coffee all day.
Cold beers, soft drinks, juices and water is available for sale 24 hours a day and the hostel operates an honesty system whereby you simply note down what you take.
The hostel has three fast computers with high speed broadband internet (2,000 Pesos per hour) along with headsets and cameras for skype calls. CD/DVD's are sold at the hostel and burning facilities are available. Free hi-speed WiFi is available throughout the building.
A large and comfortable TV area is located on the first floor with a 32 inch LCD Television and a large collection of movies.
A total of 12 large lockers are located on the ground floor - they are big enough to store a full-size laptop and a day bag and are free to use for those who have their own padlock. Several of the lockers have a built-in power supply to allow you to charge your equipment securely. Hot water showers are available 24 hours a day.
The hostel also offers a free luggage storage facility for those heading out to San Agustin, Tierradentro or the Purace National Park.
The hostel also offers a tour to the nearby thermal springs followed by a downhill biking experience. The price is 40,000 Pesos pp for 2 people or 30,000 Pesos pp for 3 people or more.
A laundry service is available for 8,000 Pesos per load.
International calls cost 500 Pesos per minute to standard landlines.

How 2 get there...
The guesthouse is conveniently located 10 minutes walk from the bus terminal and 7 minutes walk from the main square (Parque Caldas). Alternatively, a taxi from the terminal should cost no more than 3,500 Pesos. To reach the hostel by foot from the terminal, turn right out of the station and then left at the roundabout leading onto Carrera 11. Continue along here until you reach Calle 4.
You will see the hostel is a cream-coloured building located on the corner of Carrera 11 and Calle 4.
