If you have heard of Chugchilan, it's likely you know about Mama Hilda’s Hostal too. It is a landmark of this small village which is a likely stop for anyone doing the Quilotoa loop. Hostal Mama Hilda is a family run business, clean, warm and welcoming to all travelers. The owners Mama Hilda and her husband Papa Anibal, an elderly couple, will add just that extra touch to your experience of the local atmosphere.
The spectcular views from the rooms will easily relax travellers weary from a long hike or tired after a bumpy bus ride. The communal evening meal in the cosy social area adds an extra warmth to the experience and and allows the possibilty to meet with other travellers. Guests are always made to feel comfortable and at home here, one of the most stunning mountain areas in the country.
Hostal Mama Hilda can accommodate up to 46 people. It offers single/double rooms, triple rooms and family rooms for up to 5 persons. The single/double rooms with shared bathrooms cost $14 per person. All the other rooms with private bathrooms go for $17 per person. Prices include breakfast and dinner. 12 % tax is not included. Hot water is available 24 hours a day and laundry service can be provided.
While the non-smoking social area does not have a TV, it offers many other means of entertainment; music, cards, chess, etc. The small book exchange allows you to leave your old books and pick a new read.
If requested, they might be able to arrange a dance performance by local kids. Currently, they are building a social space for reading and relaxing that will also have internet facilities. Telephone service is already available.
The kitchen can also be used by guests for personal use to prepare a lunch. This can be provided by the hostel as well for extra cost.
The restaurant is also open to people not staying at Mama Hilda’s but you have to let them know 1 hour in advance. Vegetarian options are available if requested.
Guides are available for various hiking tours through the area. Horses can also be rented. By request, the hostel can arrange pick-up transportation to nearby places.
Mama Hilda welcomes volunteers willing to work at least one month in their hostel, in exchange for free meals and accommodation. Prices are negotiable for students and travelers in special circumstances.
There are several buses every day from Latacunga to Chugchilan. On Thursdays there is also a bus from Saquisili at 11:30 am.
Returning to Latacunga, a bus leaves at 3am or 4am. On Sundays there are additional buses at 6:30am, 10am and 2pm. A milk truck also leaves at 9am for Sigchos where you can connect to Latacunga.
Pick-up trucks can also be arranged.
Chugchilan can also be reached by foot with a spectacular 5 hour trek from Quilotoa or Isinlivi.
