If waking up, walking out the front gate, across the road and onto the beach sounds like your perfect way to start the day, then you should spend the night at Hostel Esperanza. The hostel is located on the esplanade directly across the road from the beach in San Juan del Sur.
The hostel property was once a holiday retreat for a wealthy family from Managua. The design is such that most of the rooms open onto a large garden courtyard with a towering mango tree in the middle creating plenty of shade.
The Hostel is generally chilled and not a mad party place. They have free coffee, drinking water, 24hr reception and nighttime security.
A dorm bed costs $7-9. The dorms have double beds on the bottom bunk so you can also share a bed and pay $1 less per person. A private from with a bathroom costs $25 and with a shared bathroom is $16-$20.
They have a kitchen, free wi-fi, a computer for guest use and a laundry service. At reception they are happy to organize transfers to the beaches out of town, book tours and activities like surf lessons.
Walk towards the beach from where the bus drops you in San Juan del Sur (it’s only 2 blocks) and then head south along the waterfront. Look out for Banco BDF, the Hostel is ½ a block past the bank.
