Alta Gracia , Santa fe , Venezuela

Once the novelty of relaxing on the palm-shaded shores of Santa Fe has worn off, the surrounding Mochima National Park is right at your fingertips and the only way you should see it is by boat!
Good value boat tours run from Playa Cochaima in Santa Fe out to the nearby Islands of the Mochima National Park. There are some perfect areas to spot dolphins and whales which live in these waters as well as visits to see flocks of pelicans and other sea birds perched on the coral outcrops, drying their wings.

There are a few boats leaving from Santa Fe each day, all doing roughly the same trip for the same price. They are a bit disorganized with their schedules though and departures are quite irregular so bear that in mind if you have to watch your time

Tours are all in Spanish and provide only basic details - if you are particularly interested in the area, maybe read up a bit before hand.

Mochima National Park boat tours
Full Day: US$14

Tours leave Santa Fe around 10am and head out into the open waters of Mochima National Park passing the islands dotted with pelicans. Once away from the mainland, dolphins and whales can often be seen jumping within metres of the boat providing excellent (if tricky!) photo opportunities.

Next, the tour passes by an outcrop covered with sea birds, occasionally dive-bombing from the rocks to retrieve a fish. Local fishermen can also be seen taking advantage of this spot for the day's catch! A little further along the tour stops for a few hours on the island of Arapo where you can have lunch, take a swim and enjoy the surroundings complete with curious iguanas!

At around 2pm, tours visit an area known as 'La Piscina' where you have the chance to snorkel and explore the reef from the boat. This is a beautiful area with crystal-clear water, an abundance of coral and a spectacular variety of tropical fish.

The return to Santa Fe is made via the collection of playas which make up the Venezuelan coastline. You pass coastal villages and fishing communities as well as neighbouring seaside destinations popular as weekend breaks.

The tour ends at around 4.30pm and takes you back to Playa Cochaima in Santa Fe.
