Cabanas Rolo, Santa Catalina, Panama

Cabaņas Rolo is one of the original surf camps in Santa Catalina. It began as a simple place to pitch a tent or sling a hammock for intrepid surfers and travelers. Over the years Rolo, who is a Catalina local, has built the business up adding first thatch huts, then later replacing them with well-built cabins and private suites.

He lives with his family above the hostel kitchen and surfs regularly, especially when the waves are big. Rolo’s is economically priced, easy to find and conveniently located.

From his place it is only a short walk to The Point, boats leaving for Coiba, the dive shops, a local bar, the only shop in town and the bus stop. For these reasons and Rolo’s friendly nature it is often the busiest hostel in Catalina.
Rolo offers three lodging options; dormitory, private rooms and suites. Dorm rooms are $10 per person and rooms range from 2 to4 beds.Every room hasa fan, hammocks out front and guests use a shared bathroom (cold water only).Thereare 2private rooms which have a/c,abathroom, a mini fridge and their own veranda. They cost $40 for a couple or $50 for 3 people. The newest editions to Rolo’s are 2 suites. They have private bathrooms with hot water, a mini fridge, a/c,TVwith cable, beds for up to 4 people and are rented for $50 a night for a couple, $60 for 3 people and $70 for 4 people. The top suite has an ocean view and is an extra $5.All guests are welcome to free coffee and tea in the morning and use of the communal kitchen open from 6:30am to 9pm.

Rolo’s also offers boat tours and surf lessons. A 2 hour surf lesson with all day board hire is $25, just board hireis $10 for the day or $50 the week. Boat tours are for fishing, snorkeling, visiting Coiba or surfing. They can take up to 10 people and provide fishing or snorkeling equipment. A trip to Coiba is $50 per person, snorkeling around Cebaco Island will be less as its closer. Surfing trips to breaks on Cebaco Island cost $150-$200 for the whole boat and a half day fishing trip (with equipment) will cost $200 or $300 for a full day. They also have kayaks for hire which are $15 for a full day and a great way to explore near-by Islita Santa Catalina (off town beach).

Telephone is probably the most reliable way to contact Cabaņas Rolo, though they also have email. They are busy in summer (Dec-April) so it is often hard to book for short stays but for longer stays and large groups they take reservations. Spanish is preferred, but there is usually someone about to help with any enquiries in English.
How to get there...
Rolo’s is on the main street in Santa Catalina, close to Town Beach. Anyone in town can point you there including the bus driver. The bus may drop you directly out front or in the center of town. If the bus stops in the center of town (near the pink shop and the phone boxes) walk down the main street towards the beach, Rolo’s is on the left.
