Casa Verde Limon, Valparaiso , Chile

With a trapeze and circus ribbon hanging in the 20-metre high skylight atrium, giant hand-painted murals both inside and out, a sofa with a tail and its own unique artisan shop selling everything from puppets to sculptures made by local artists, Casa Verde Limon certainly wows with its quirky character and charm.

Following four years of careful conversion from a 1925 residential building, owner, artist and Chilena Ximena Urra now welcomes travellers into her home to experience this comfortable, well-designed and centrally-located hostel, the kind you would expect from arty Valparaiso.
There are 9 rooms split between two floors with their own entrances, each room with its own colour scheme and character. One 5-bed dorm has beds in two separate rooms at CLP$6500 per person. 7 double rooms with modern satellite TVs and various items of wood furniture are available for CLP$17,000 per room. There's also a miniloft with private kitchen and bathroom which costs CLP$28.000 per night. All rooms share bathrooms and include free tea & coffee and towels.

Breakfast is available at a cost of CLP$1,800 per person, served between 9-11am, including coffee, tea, milk, herbal tea, fruit, cereals, yogurt, bread, butter and jam (to be ordered the night before).

The ground floor has 6 rooms and a large open-plan lounge/dining room, with one computer offering free internet (WiFi also available), leading to a well-equipped kitchen with mini-oven, hobs, microwave and fridge freezer. The first floor has 3 rooms and a smaller kitchen and seating area.

A library with book exchange facility is available as is a good selection of board games and cards. The helpful staff will provide a map and overview of the city upon arrival.

The hostel rents out 18-gear bicycles with helmets and safety locks from CLP$3500 for 4hrs. Laundry service costing CLP$3500 per load is offered through a local launderette.

Owner Ximena also has her own unique artisan shop called ´Gente de Tierra´ which sells one-off sculptures, ceramics, paintings and clothing, made by local artists and artisans.
