Hostel El Encuentro, Guatape, Colombia

Travelers planning a visit to Guatapé as a one-day side trip often find themselves extending their stay for much longer, especially if they end up at Hostel El Encuentro.
Opened in February 2011, this hostel perches on a cliff overlooking a pristine lake and miles of rolling green hills. But the breathtaking views aren’t the only things keeping people here.

As the sole hostel with private access to the lake and also within walking distance to the center of town, Hostel El Encuentro is the perfect home-base for relaxation or adventure. Tranquil colors, large windows and airy structures blend comfortable indoor lodging with easy access to the outdoors.

Owner and veteran backpacker Greg Shiffer brings extensive experience and runs this place with effortless calm. “I want it to be like a finca in nature,” says Shiffer who has created a comfortable, fun and home-like vibe in the middle of a natural sanctuary. Eco-concious travelers will appreciate the earth-friendly practices--from composting and recycling to organic veggies, which are in the works for the surrounding gardens.
