Hostel Valhalla, Cotopaxi  National Park, Ecuador

Hostel Valhalla is a friendly and beautifully located place to stay in the foothills of Cotopaxi. Owned by Moggely Tours in Quito, this the base they use for acclimatization and some rest time before the ascent of the Cotopaxi peak. Others travellers use the hostel as a place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Paramo landscape with views over 16 of the country's most impressive peaks on clear days.

Edwin and Augusto will make you feel right at home providing a friendly welcome, comfortable rooms and delicious meals throughout your stay. There is a nice social area where guests can relax and chat with other travellers and also a viewing deck outside where guests can see the towering Cotopaxi, Las Ilanizas, Chimborazo and many of the other famous Ecuadorian peaks with a bit of luck.

This is a lovely place to relax before climbing Cotopaxi or even while trekking in the National Park. It has all the comforts you could ask for while feeling like your a million miles from civilization!
The hostel has 14 spacious, clean and comfortable rooms, all with wood burning stoves or electric heating. Several of the rooms have ensuite bathrooms and all rooms offer fantastic panoramic views over the spectacular landscape.

Generally, stays at Hostel Valhalla are included in the Moggely Tours excursions to Cotopaxi however travellers are welcome to come here independently and stay for a couple of days exploring the area. Prices vary as there are many different options, everything from dorm accommodation at $9 to all inclusive packages in ensuite rooms with wood-burning stoves for $34.

The lounge area is a great place to relax with a book exchange, cable TV and an extensive DVD collection and the viewing deck outside is a great spot from which to see the mountains.

The meals are healthy and delicious and prepared on site by Augusto and are served in the cozy dining area which looks out onto Cotopaxi itself.

The llamas and dogs make for entertaining viewing and roam free around the garden of the hostel!

There are some lovely short walks to be taken around the hostel including a twenty minute trail to see a selection of Paramo flora including orchids and highland grasses.
How to get there...
Hostel Valhalla is easy to access if you have your own transport as it's clearly signposted from the Panamericana about 8 km south of Machachi.

By public transport, just ask the driver to let you off the bus at Hostel Valhalla just south of Machachi. From there you'll need to walk about a km further off of the main road (following the signs) to the hostel.
