Hotel Oasis, Riobamba, Ecuador

If you enjoy a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere then you won't find many more amicable places than Hotel Oasis. The kindly older couple who own the hotel, Vicente and Maria-Theresa Cardenas, wish nothing more than to make Oasis “Your home away from home”, an intention proudly declared from their colourful banner the reception of their tranquil little hotel.

Unless your house includes touches like stained glass windows and miniature castle ramparts Oasis is probably not going to particularly resemble your home, but it does manage to capture the safe and friendly feeling that can be so elusive when backpacking in Latin America. Fortunately the castle theme does not dominate the entire hostel but just gives a little quirk to the rooms which adds to the character of the place.

Oasis is actually two hotels, there is a second building eight blocks away on Colombia and Benalcazar. The second hotel is being renovated and will be ready in February. Oasis “2” has similar facilities but larger rooms and an excellent kitchen. Oasis “2” also has the advantage of a 15 hole mini-golf course.
Hotel Oasis has eight rooms, five with double beds and all with private bathrooms. There is also four-bed dorm which has a private bathroom and a private kitchen. All rooms are clean and quiet.

Room rates start at $15 per person per night and there is a double room that costs $26 for a couple and another at $30 per couple. Triple and Quad rooms cost $13 per person. If you are a large group or if you intend to stay longer then seven days then you can negotiate a discount. Hotel Oasis is not short on facilities. Each room comes equipped with cable TV, bathroom, hot water, cupboards and reading lamps. Outside of the rooms the following facilities are available:

Small shared kitchen
Flower-filled courtyard with tables and sun shades
Beautiful garden with six hole (rather cramped) mini-golf
Free wi-fi – available in rooms and in garden/courtyard
Internet available on request at $0.50 per hour
Nintendo Wii
Small shop in reception
Cheap international phone calls to US and Canada
Secure off-street parking
Reception contains a safe for valuables.
24 hour manned door.

The owners have an excellent local knowledge which they are keen to share. The hotel will help you to organise tours to various places of interest such as the Nariz del Diablo train or treks to Chimborazo and Parque Sangay. Oasis can advise on local tour agencies as they have contacts in several, and also help you plan your own trip. For example the guided tour to the Atello lakes can be somewhat expensive, however, Vicente has tips on how to take the bus and trek there yourself.
How to get there...
Oasis is best reached from either of the citys two bus terminals via taxi. If the taxi driver asks for more than a dollar he is trying it on, don't fall for tourist prices. You can also take a $1 taxi to the train station if you are planning on experiencing the famous “Nariz del Diablo” route, or it is a fifteen minute walk.
