Luna’s Castle, Panama city , Panama

Looking off the balcony over the Pacific Ocean, you see the infinite skyscrapers that line the coast around downtown Panama City. Only four months open and Luna’s Castle is fast becoming the “backpacker” stop. Located in the heart of Casco Viejo (Old Quarter), Luna’s Castle is a great point for any sight seeing in the area or a short taxi ride to most attractions around the city.

Opened by three hostel owner-experienced Americans, Dan, Dave and Dan, Luna’s Castle has all the amenities a hostel needs. From a free pancake and fruit breakfast every morning, to guitars, board games and porker chips for all to use, there is never a shortage of things to do when the rain traps you indoors. You can visit their movie theater on the first level or surf the web on one of their free computers.

If you are looking for things to do around the city, take a look at either their Guide to Panama binder, full of restaurants and sights, or their white board in the lounge room. It displays daily events or things to do, and is updated weekly. If you don’t find what you are looking for there, the staff is very knowledgeable and can always provide additional ideas.

If your budget is getting a little tight, Luna’s Castle is a great option. As it says on the many posters around the hostel “Join the Luna’s Castle family for a while”. They offer a free stay in return for a vast number of ways to contribute to the hostel or “If you have any projects that you think would add to the Luna Atmosphere, please come talk to us about a FREE STAY”.

For anyone looking to have some fun, maybe do a little partying, Luna’s Castle should definitely be a stop on your way through Panama. Keep in mind that Luna’s Castle has two sister hostels in the beautiful islands of Bocas del Toro, near the eastern border of Panama and Costa Rica, Mondo Taitu and Heiki, that always welcome guests of Luna’s.
Luna’s Castle only offers Dorm Beds at $12 a night including breakfast and internet. Double rooms cost $28.

Check out is a relaxed 12 pm, but for anyone needing to leave before 8 am, they must check out the night before.

A fully equipped kitchen and Internet are available 24/7 for all guests to use. However, the theater and balcony are closed around midnight every night.

Luna offers laundry service for $4 per load and plenty of luggage storage. They also have a book exchange and many guide books available to study.
How to get there...
Main Airport: Here you can catch a taxi for about $25 or take the Tecuman bus to Plaza Cinqo de Mayo for $0.35. Be aware that this bus can quite often be full and doesn’t take you all the way to the hostel. However, Plaza Cinqo de Mayo is a short $1 taxi ride or a 10 to 15 minute walk.

Albrook Bus Station: A taxi should be about $2-3 to Casco Viejo.

You can tell a cab driver: “En Casco Viejo, Despues del Mercado publico se sube la rampa hasta la plaza dos de enero y Luna’s Castle es la segunda casa a la derecha.”
