If there were “Bocas” words for party, they would be “Mondo Taitu”. With happy hour and cocktail hour every night, there’s already a recipe in place for an amazing night out; throw in an 80s night/power hour combo and you won’t know what hit you! Mondo Taitu gives you a feeling of family with people you’ve just met. Pulling you in and holding you there for a great deal longer than you had planned to be—but in this case it’s OK.
Mondo Taitu starts your day with a free pancake breakfast that provides the energy you need to make it through one more Bocas-filled day. Sit down and enjoy while you read up on world news in the daily paper or checkout their book of things to do. The islands are full of restaurants, hot-spot beaches, and surfing. There is also a brief idea of prices to get to different points around the islands and the staff is always available to help you out with information.
Mondo Taitu knows what exercise is like after a long night out and accommodates for your on island travel with free bicycles to ease the pain. Singles are available, but for those couples looking to spice things up, there are two double-seaters as well.
If you are looking for that great night out, but would rather stay in quieter accommodations, be sure to check out Mondo Taitu’s sister hostel, Heike, on the main street in town. They offer all the same amenities a little closer to the center of town. It’s a five minute walk to the Mondo Taitu bar and you will be sure to find plenty of people from Heike heading that way..
Regular dorm beds are $10 per night or air-conditioned dorm beds for $12.
Double-bed private rooms are also available for $22 per night.
As Bocas is known for surfing, when in season, Mondo Taitu and Heike, both, buy, sell and rent surfboards. Rentals for short boards are $12 per day and long boards are $15. They have plenty of places to chill out and read a book, play some board games, or of course, the all-important drinking games before a night on the town.
For those heading to Panama City, be sure to check out the newest hostel of the family, Luna’s Castle.
From the airport, jump in a taxi and tell them you’re heading to Mondo Taitu or Heike. It should cost about $1.
From the water taxi, turn right, directly onto the main street, Calle 3. For Heike, it will be about 200m on your left-hand side. For Mondo Taitu, walk about 300m to the end of the street. Turn left onto Avenida Norte and it’s 75m up on your right. You can also take a regular taxi from the water taxi station, which will cost $.50 to $1.
For those taking the overnight bus from Panama City, be aware that the water taxi will drop you off at about 6.30 a.m. Both Heike and Mondo Taitu open at 8 a.m. Don’t panic. Relax and have some much needed breakfast at El Lorito on your left hand side just past Heike.
