The Pelican Larry opened in November 2008 and is located in a large open plan, 2 story house in the leafy and quiet neighbourhood of Santa Monica, to the north of downtown Cali.
The owner, who refers to himself as 'Larry', has travelled extensively throughout Colombia, visiting for the first time in 1996, in the days largely before hostels existed in the country. Recently realising there was a gap in the hostel market and also realising the potential of Cali itself, he decided to set up shop to provide backpackers with a new place to stay in Cali.
The hostel is perfectly positioned with many bars and restaurants of the Zona Rosa within 5 minutes walk and central Cali within an easy 20 minute stroll.
There is a fully equipped kitchen, some good sized common area´s and a great TV room complete with Plasma, cable and movies – the couches will remind you of the ones you miss at home. Beverages are available at a cheap prices, spanish classes can be organised and there is a big BBQ on every Sunday night for $9000, which will get you a reportedly massive feast of chicken, beef, pork and a number of specialty salads.
Staff are also very helpful with any information you may need on Cali and it´s surrounding area´s, assistance for Colombia VISA extensions and travel throughout South America itself.
Given that the hostel is in its infancy, there are future plans for extensions to the roof top and also improvements to the outdoor terrace area. The Pelican Larry has all the trimmings for a clean and decent hostel, even to the detail of the 2m long orthopedic beds for the taller travellers. Also note there is a strict NO DRUG´s policy.
Otherwise, you can take a taxi which should cost no more than $3500. Make sure the driver knows where the hostel is before leaving.
