Plantation House is a picturesque and homely hostel on the edge of Salento. With a large beautiful jungle-style garden, simple rooms and a friendly, traveller atmosphere, this place is well a well located base from which to explore the magnificent coffee region.

Tim, an Englishman, and his Colombian wife Cristina opened Plantation House as the first backpacker's home in Salento in 2003 and have expanded the business little by little over the past few years. Plantation house is now spread over two buildings, the original being an old coffee finca whilst the new addition is a renovated farmhouse literally across the road from the original.

The Plantation House has seven private rooms (3 with private bathrooms) and fifteen dormitory beds available, divided between the two buildings. The main Plantation House caters has private accommodation and a small dormitory with the newer Plantation House housing the larger dormitory.

Prices are 18,000/21,000 Pesos per person in a 3-bed dormitory(without/with bathroom). Private doubles cost from 35,000 to 37,000 Pesos with shared bath and 47,000 to 50,000 for a double with private bathroom. Single occupancy costs from 27,000 to 42,000 Pesos.

There is internet access available at the hostel.

There are books for exchange as well as for sale and several board games are available for those who prefer to sit back and relax in the hostel. For those who prefer to get out and about, there are town maps on hand as well as plenty of local information on what to see and do in and around Salento. Plantation House can organise tours of coffee farms including tours of their coffee farm with Don Eduardo.

In the main building of Plantation House, there is a self-catering kitchen and dining area where free coffee from their coffee farm is on tap all day. In the dormitory block a separate kitchen is available as well as a comfortable lounge complete with chimney.

The beautiful and tranquil gardens offer excellent views
and the outdoor terrace area is the perfect place to spend the evening with your feet up after a day making the most of the region's attractions.

Tim, Cristina or any of the staff at Plantation House can provide any information you might need to allow you to make the most of Salento and it's surroundings. Richi from CicloSalento is usually around and about most days and rents out top quality mountain bikes for those wishing to explore the area on two wheels.

The best way to get to Plantation house as it's a little off the beaten track is to head first to Armenia (easily reached from Bogota, Manizales, Medellin). From Armenia you'll find regular buses (around 45 minutes) through to Salento although be aware that the last one leaves around 8pm. The bus makes a stop by the fire station just as it arrives in Salento where you will see a sign on the left with directions to Plantation house. Ask anyone in the street if you have problems, it's a very friendly town and everyone knows Plantation!
