More information on Rio Caura...
The Rio Caura is located in the west of the state of Bolívar, Venezuela. The Rio Caura area is huge, covering 45,336km2, 5% of the territory of Venezuela, in a relatively untouched area of rivers and rain forest. The Caura is a black water tributary to the Orinoco, and is in a protected part of the country. The Caura spills 3500m3 /s of water into the Orinoco and is the second biggest tributary out of the guayana-shield.
Around 475 species of birds, 168 species of mammals, 13 species of amphibious and 25 species of reptiles are found in this area. More than half of all species in the Guayana region, and most of the plants in the Cuara basin are endemic which means that they only exist in this area.
The Indian tribes that live in the area include the Ye´kwana und Sanema (Yanomami). They maintain a traditional lifestyle through their traditions and culture. These communities survive through fishing, hunting, growing crops (mainly manioc and bananas), preparing their “Casabe”-bread, and collecting what they find in the jungle. Depending on age, gender and skills each member contributes something to improve the community.
