The Wandering Paisa is a six-room hostel in the heart of Laureles, and within walking distance to restaurants, bars and an immaculate stadium originally built to host the South America Olympic games.
Open in early 2011 with the goal of showing travelers “the other side of Medellin,” this hostel delivers with a great location and a mellow blend of tourism and local culture.
Co-owners and brothers Miles and Brent Knowles took a house on a quiet street near the famous avenue 70 and re-invented the space with vibrant colors and pragmatic design.
What really sets the Wandering Paisa apart is the friendly staff invested in making your Medellin stay a memorable and genuine experience. Bring all your questions - from what to do and how to get anywhere in Medellin to how to extend your visa - and this staff will go the extra steps to help, “con gusto.”
The Wandering Paisa has several sleeping options on two floors. Upstairs, you’ll find two large 8-bed dorms and two smaller 6-bed and 4-bed dorms. An ample number of bathrooms are placed strategically on both floors.
Downstairs, you’ll find two private rooms with private bathrooms. Beds are comfortable and clean.
Traveling cooks will appreciate the shared kitchen which is well-organized and never skimps on the necessities (tupperware, plastic wrap, you name it, it’s stocked here).
Each nook and cranny of the original building has been furnished to provide a place for travelers to tuck away and relax. The first floor hosts a television room with a big-screen television, movies and games, a stage with an open deck that is home to salsa classes and karaoke nights and a garage beautifully re-imagined as a laid-back bar.
Upstairs, a deck holds five hammocks, a sofa and a book exchange. And of course, there is a terrace for those who need a different view or a cigarette break.
Other helpful must-haves include laundry service, internet-enabled computers and free wifi for those traveling with web-enabled devices.
Rates start at 19,000 COP for a bed in a large dorm and go up to 80,000 COP for two people in a large private room, but prices vary in between these options.
The Wandering Paisa is walking distance from the Estadio Metro Station in Medellin. Exit Estadio Station and head south on Avenue 70 or “La Setenta.” Turn Left onto Calle 44 and walk about halfway to where that block dead-ends on a residential street. The hostel is on your left side.
