- Backpacking Hostels in Brazil, South America

With over 16 years experience, Guamanchi Expeditions have certainly put this time to good use and are now one of Mérida's best established tour agencies with highly recommended tours. Tours specialize in making the most of the local attractions, incorporating adventurous tours and activities with culturally rich visits to local communities and experiencing the natural beauty of one of Venezuela's most dramatic regions. With Venezuela's tallest mountain Pico Bolivar right on the doorstep proving a tempting challenge and the nature-rich flatlands of Los Llanos within reach, you have it all at your fingertips and Guamanchi Expeditions will make sure you get the most out of it! Based in the city of Mérida, Guamanchi is one of the original tour companies in town and have built up their reputation through providing a great variety of tours and activities. This creativity, diversity and attention to detail can also be seen in their excellent Guamanchi Posadas, both in Mérida itself and in the traditional mountainside town of Los Nevados.
Los Nevados (3 days, 2 nights)
Guamanchi is the only tour company in Mérida with it's very own Posada (opened in August 1995) in the beautiful mountain village of Los Nevados. This is one of the most popular tours for those wanting maximum variety in the mountains without the rigors of camping and climbing. We travel by jeep, horse or mule, and by foot on a circular route from Mérida passing through small typical settlements, semi-desert, paramo scenery, high mountains (close to Pico Bolivar) and cloud forest. We spend one night in Posada Guamanchi in Los Nevados and one night in a rustic farmhouse.
Los Llanos (4 days, 3 Nights) from
Enjoy the very best of the valley of Mérida en route to Los Llanos in the morning of the first day and get your first taste of the flatlands in the afternoon. It's then nearly two full days on foot, horses, by jeep and boat in the Los Llanos region. Here you will have the chance to see river dolphins, crocodiles, thousands of birds, capybaras, go fishing for piranhas and see some stunning sunsets - this is a strikingly different experience! All three nights are spent in hammocks and the tour returns you on the fourth day to Mérida - drops-offs can also be arranged in Barinas and Mantecal.
Old Spanish Mule Trail (5 days)-
From the lush valley of Mérida to the hot flatlands of Barinas. A fascinating hike taking in Paramo, cloud forest, log bridges over rivers and streams, deserted cottages, dark lagunas, waterfalls, wild coffee bushes, orchids and ferns. The expedition begins at 3000m, peaks at 4100m and ends at just 400m in Los Llanos and you are certain to meet almost no other people on the way! Group members can be left in Barinas on the drive back or returned to Mérida.
