Take two young Brazilian siblings Caio and Marilia who were brought up on the island, a friendly and relaxed family house, an injection of colour and rustic charm to reflect the Brazilian way of life, add some of the most helpful staff you'll meet and you get Tucano House in Florianopolis. The many hammocks strung along the first floor verandah, an inviting plunge pool and sociable buffet-style evening meals are just a few of the highlights of a stay in this brilliantly laid-back hostel.
The hostel's central location in Lagoa da Conceição makes it a perfect base for visiting the beaches of the East coast, easily accessible from Florianopolis town by bus or foot, and checking out the lively resort of Lagoa, the waterside area of which has excellent bars and restaurants. Just ask the staff the best spots to explore - they grew up here and know it like the back of their hand!
There are 7 rooms in total, each named after the island´s finest and most popular beaches. They are as follows:
Campeche: a 4-bed dorm on the first floor with shared bathroom costing R$35 per person;
Praia Mole: a 12-bed dorm on the first floor costing R$35 per person;
Joaquina: a 10-bed dorm on the first floor costing R$35 per person;
Galheta: a 6-bed female dorm on the first floor costing R$35 per person;
Matadeiro: is a private double room with ensuite bathroom with fan costing R$90 per room;
Moçambique and Lagoinha do Leste are both private double rooms on the second floor and share the same bathroom, both costing R$80 per room.
Breakfast is included in the price and the hostel has great seasonal promotions including free nights and free dinners for longer stays. Individual lockers are located on the ground floor by reception. Towels can be rented for just R$3.50.
Breakfast is served from 8-11am and uses local produce, including fruit salad, fresh fruits, breads, tea, coffee and cakes. There is a guest kitchen available to use which is well-equipped, with oven, hobs, fridge freezer and microwave, with a separate dining area attached to it which also has tea and coffee available during the day.
There are two flat-screen computers available in reception which are Skype enabled. WiFi access is available throughout the hostel and rooms. The house has a family house style layout, and the front of the house has a great garden with decked plunge pool, tables, chairs and an outdoor bar area which serves beers, cocktails and soft drinks. Evening ´all you can eat´ buffet-style meals are served here and change daily offering a variety of styles from Mexican to Arabian for just R$12 per person plus desert, from 8pm. A TV lounge has satellite TV with DVD player and a range of DVDs and CDs and there is a pool table in the converted garage area. Upstairs is a spacious verandah with hammocks and swing chairs.
The reception is open 8am-10pm and the bilingual staff offer excellent local knowledge and can book tours, bicycles are provided free of charge and help arrange onwards transportation for guests. Surfboards are available free of charge and lessons can be organised. Laundry service is also available from a local service that collects from the hostel and luggage storage facilities are offered.
